Meridian Headphone Spatial Processing (HSP) improves the unnatural ‘in-head’ soundstage that naturally occurs from traditional headphone listening.
By introducing crosstalk between the left and right channels, in combination with specifically designed filters to replicate the acoustic shadowing caused by the listener’s own head, HSP delivers a more natural, stable ‘out-of-head’ soundstage without dramatically affecting overall tonal balance.
When listening to stereo recordings over headphones there is a lack of crosstalk, i.e. the left channel only goes to the left ear and the right channel to the right ear. Most recordings are made with loudspeakers in mind and crosstalk is important for the reproduction of the stereo soundstage. The lack of crosstalk results in an unnatural, distorted, soundstage. Sounds that would normally come from just the right or left speaker come from the extreme left or right over head phones, and sound panned between the left and right speaker sound as if they come from inside the listener's head.
Whilst listening to recordings over headphones, Headphone Spatial Processing (HSP) combines crosstalk between the left and right channel with carefully designed filters to simulate the natural crosstalk experienced in stereo loudspeaker listening.
HSP results in a more-natural soundstage that does not sound "in-the-head" and is much more like listening to a pair of speakers in front of the listener.
